Dr. Ami Houston, Assistant Principal

Dr. Ami Houston

I began my career in education in 2008, teaching middle school mathematics in rural West Texas. Throughout my career, I have taught students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels and coached high school track and field. Those experiences have provided a unique perspective that continues to shape my approach to teaching, learning, and leadership.

In 2017, my family and I relocated to St. Charles Parish after falling in love with southeast Louisiana and its incredible sense of community. I joined Harry Hurst Middle School, where I taught ELA and mathematics before transitioning into school leadership.

As a committed lifelong learner, I earned a Master's degree in Educational Leadership from Dallas Baptist University and a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Abilene Christian University. In 2022, I began serving as an assistant principal at R.K. Smith Middle School before joining Destrehan High School in 2025. In my current role, I support teachers across multiple content areas, serve as the junior class administrator, and work alongside students, families, and staff to create an environment where everyone is challenged, supported, and empowered to succeed.

It is a privilege to serve the Destrehan High School community and to work alongside students, staff, and families as we embrace our mission to Make Today Count.
